Bharatiyam Vidyarthi (student)
A poor, rural student in India faces many problems: uneducated parents, lack of space and environment in the house to read and write, pre-occupation with other responsibilities, lack of books and other educational resources, lack of interaction with teachers after school, lack of confidence, non-participation in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, lack of vision, no scope for application of knowledge, undermined mental ability, absence of higher order thinking skills, etc. Additionally, many of them lack mentors and role models who can guide them out of such dire conditions and show them opportunity to grow.
Many students, especially girls, are unable to go to school because of several reasons, such as not having a proper school uniform to wear, no guarantee of having a lunch to carry every morning, no money to commute, and most importantly no support from society. Some studies reveal that a majority of the girls drop out of schools due to lack of proper sanitation facilities.
Bharatiyam has a two-pronged approach to Vidyarthi. One facet involves addressing the aforementioned blockades to a child's pursuit of education. The second facet focuses on providing the greatest value for every moment spent on the school campus by teaching socially relevant education, providing a perspective of opportunities that lie ahead, and encouraging critical thinking at every juncture. Specific activities that Bharatiyam undertakes to decrease student dropout rate and help students achieve 15 years of meaningful, process-based quality education are:
